Four public beaches in Cancun will be reopening for visitors starting on September 7th, 2020.
When Cancun reopened for tourism back on June 8th, beaches were only open for guests staying in beachfront resorts and hotels.
For travelers staying in non beachfront resorts and vacation rentals, beach access was denied. Locals were also shut out from their own beaches causing widespread controversy.
Starting September 7th, Cancun will lower its epidemiological light to yellow meaning public beaches can begin to reopen for visitors.
Cancun mayor Mara Lezama announced that Playas Chac Mool, Las Perlas and Delfines beaches will reopen on September 7th followed by Playa El Niño on September 11th.
“Thanks to everyone’s efforts, we received the news that as of Monday, September 7, in the municipality of Benito Juárez, the epidemiological light will turn yellow. This allows us to increase the percentage of activities and the opening of public beaches in a responsible manner,” explained Lezama.
Strict new health and safety protocols will go into effect as Cancun beaches reopen to the public.
Officials will form access lines and visitors temperatures will be taken before being allowed to enter.
Beaches will operate at 60% of capacity from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm daily.
Other COVID-19 prevention measures include the prohibition of alcoholic beverages on beaches and limiting groups to a maximum of 5 people.
Sports will not be allowed and social distancing will be in effect.
Tourists have been flocking to Cancun as Mexico has some of the easiest COVID-19 entry requirements in the world. Both quarantines and COVID-19 testing is not required for entry.
Mexico is one of the few countries that is open to American tourists.
Over 70,000 tourists flocked to Cancun in the first 30 days after reopening.
The popular vacation destinations Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Mazatlán have also reopened for tourism
Due to the popularity of Cancun quickly following its reopening, the Cancun International airport had to open a second terminal to keep up with the growing amount of tourists to the popular beach destination.
Although flights to Cancún from both domestic and international destinations are still below pre-pandemic levels, air traffic at the city’s airport is increasing.
Among the international destinations with connections to Cancún are the U.S. cities of Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Denver, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Baltimore, Charlotte, New York, Miami, Atlanta, Houston and Dallas, and Montreal, Canada.
